Alpacas - General Information

ResourcesAdult huacaya male - Books, Magazines, and Videos

There are some excellent herd health and management books, magazines, and videos available to alpaca breeders.   I will give you a list of book suggestions so you can begin building your personal library.  The definitive magazine resource is Alpacas Magazine.   It is an invaluable resource for keeping up with current issues and trends in the alpaca industry.  I cannot personally recommend any video sets because I have not previewed any but there are many out there for your review.

I am a book lover.  I can never have too many books.  Here are the titles to a few books that I have on the subject of herd health.  They are,  by no means, all the books, or necessarily the "best" books.  They are just some of the books that would make great additions to any alpaca breeder's personal library.

Alpacas Synthesis of a Miracle by Michael Safley

The Camelid Companion Handling and Training Your Alpacas & Llamas by Marty McGee Bennett

Caring for Llamas and Alpacas A Health and Management Guide by Clare Hoffman, DVM

Llama-Alpaca Veterinary Field Manual by C. Norman Evans, DVM

Llama and Alpaca Neonatal Care by Bradford B. Smith, DVM, Karen I. Timm, DVM, and Patrick O. Long, DVM

I have a book wish list of books I intend to include in my library in the future.  My book wish list includes:

The Complete Alpaca Book by Eric Hoffman

Alpaca Field Manual by C. Norman Evans, DVM

Remember, books are only effective if you read them BEFORE you run into a problem.  If you have to frantically thumb through them in the middle of a difficult delivery, you will likely be frustrated and ineffective in assisting your animal.  And, books can only go so far.  Your best education will come from the day to day experience of being an alpaca breeder.  The simple task of watching your animals will tell you volumes about what makes them tick.

Happy Learning!
